As we reach the end of another year at West Country Tiling, I like to look back and reflect on what we have achieved throughout the year. We have had another extremely busy and successful year, completing various historically significant and complex roofing projects.

One such project was Quarr Abbey on the Isle of Wight, a logistical minefield with all the materials, tools, labourers and an ornate stain glass window in need of restoration, being shipped across the Solent and back again. We also carried out a roofing project on a stunning Georgian house on Widcombe Crescent in Bath, which required us to invest in a new Euro 6 ‘green’ truck, in order to comply with BANES’s new Clean Air Zone.

We have also faced our fair share of challenges in 2022, not least of which was a supply and demand issue of materials, causing shortages in good quality slate and clay tiles. Also, the ever-increasing cost of oil, gas and electricity pushed up the prices across the whole of the construction industry.

Another ongoing challenge is recruiting good employees to work in the roofing industry. We are promoting some of our best employees internally, to create another two new gangs in the New Year. This means we’re seeking new roofers and roofing apprentices to take on in 2023. As an equal opportunities employer, we are specifically interested in hiring female roofers, as we feel women are underrepresented in the roofing industry. Although we did employ our first female roofer in 2022, this sadly didn’t work out and we’re on the lookout for some great new people to join our team.

Looking forwards to 2023

Our volume of orders has shown no sign of slowing down, and 2023 is already looking like another very busy year, with all six of our roofing gangs fully booked in 2023 and two of the gangs fully booked for 2024 as well! To stay on top of this huge workload, we plan to expand our roofing gangs from six to eight in 2023.
