To clean roof tiles, you should do so with care to avoid damaging the surface or underlying structure. At West Country Tiling, we recommend the following approach:

  • Avoid pressure washing – high-pressure water can strip away protective layers or damage older tiles, especially on heritage roofs.
  • Use a soft brush and mild solution – gently remove moss, lichen or dirt using a stiff-bristled brush and a solution of water and mild detergent. Always work from the top down to prevent water getting under the tiles.
  • Check for damage – while cleaning, look out for cracked or loose tiles. These should be repaired promptly to prevent leaks or further issues.
  • Consider professional cleaning – for delicate or listed buildings, or if access is difficult, we advise using a professional roof cleaning service familiar with traditional roofing methods.
