At West Country Tiling, we’re not just experts in tiling roofs, but also in making sure the rain water that falls on them is taken away efficiently. We have worked with many different types of guttering systems over the years, including cast iron, plastic, aluminium and galvanised steel, but our preferred option is cast aluminium guttering.
Historically, there were three choices for rainwater goods. The first was cast iron, the second copper and the third was asbestos. Asbestos was generally used on agricultural buildings, copper on ecclesiastical and cast iron on residential. The only downside to cast iron is the need to re-decorate it as it will eventually rust.
Then along came plastic and this has proved to be immensely popular because of its low cost and light weight.
In the 1980’s extruded aluminium became very popular, again because of its low cost. Although the gutter itself was fine, if unattractive, the issue with this as a system was that the joints and fixings were very weak and failed quickly.
There are a myriad of choices when it comes to rainwater good today, but for a traditional look without the need for re-decorating, the choice has to be powder coated cast aluminium.
Rainclear Systems
We now use Swindon based Rainclear as our guttering supplier. Their cast aluminium gutters are ideal for the traditional properties we tend to work on because they are robust and long lasting. Although they are lighter than cast iron, cast aluminium guttering is incredibly durable. Cast aluminium guttering looks a lot like the traditional cast iron guttering used on historical or listed buildings, but it doesn’t rust like iron does and it is powder coated in a wide range of different colours.
