Clay roof tiles come in a variety of styles, each with its own purpose and traditional use. At West Country Tiling, we work with a wide range of clay tile types to suit different properties and roofing needs:

  • Clay Plain Tiles – small, flat tiles laid in overlapping rows. Common on traditional homes, especially in the South of England. They offer a timeless appearance and excellent durability.
  • Clay Pantiles – recognisable by their distinctive S-shape, pantiles create a rippled effect on the roof. They are popular in coastal and eastern parts of the England and are lighter than plain tiles, requiring fewer tiles per square metre.
  • Clay Ridge Tiles – these are specially shaped tiles used to cap the ridge (the top) and hips (angled junctions) of a roof. Available in a variety of profiles, including half-round and angled, they provide both weather protection and a finished look.
  • Clay Bonnet or Hip Tiles:  – designed for use on the hips of a roof, these provide a neat, weatherproof finish where roof slopes meet.
  • Ornamental or Decorative Tiles – often used on period or listed buildings, these tiles add detail and character, especially at ridges or verges.

We source and lay high-quality, handmade or machine-formed clay roof tiles depending on the needs of the project. If you are unsure which type is suitable for your property, our experienced team is happy to advise, please contact us to discuss your requirements.
